We’re talking about the Philips Golden Ears Challenge – an online test of your analytical hearing skills that, while providing an excellent hear-off evening of fun with your mates, might also improve your mixes…
Train your ears – for free!
For me, one of the places I most want to be with my mixes is to hear a part in a mix and say something like “Ah! I know just what that rhythm guitar needs, a wide 3 dB cut at 2.7 kHz”. Assuming, of course, that what the rhythm guitar needs is indeed a wide 3 dB cut centered on 2.7 kHz.
With a bit of ear training, we can all improve our ability to listen critically and analytically, and the results may come through in your mixes, so why not give the Golden Ears Challenge a go? There’s probably nothing on the TV tonight anyway…
