1. Hello! Who are you, where are you from and all that good stuff.
My name is Ed and I play music under the name of Dog On A Swing, based in Edinburgh.
2. Tell us a bit about the music you make.
DOAS are somewhere between a solo project and a band- a collective? I started out playing unplugged open mics so there’s a folky tinge to the music but genre-wise my songs go all over the place.
3. When did you start and what made you want to start making music?
I’ve been playing guitar since I was a teenager (since I first heard Green Day’s Dookie), but I didn’t really properly finish songs until I was in my late twenties. I got into music through the aforementioned Green Day phase which developed into a love for Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and The Dismemberment Plan (amongst many others) but an intense few years in my mid-twenties made me dramatically re-evaluate my life and treasure music’s capacity for self-expression and connection. Our debut album Autonomy is roughly set in that period of time!
4. Stage or studio?
Hmmm, I do love getting into the studio with local musical genius Graeme Mearns (who’s produced both EPs and the forthcoming album) but you cannae beat showing up somewhere and bashing out a brand new song.
5. What gear do you use to make your tunes?
I like to keep things insultingly simple for myself so I go for an Ibanez acoustic [on long-term loan from my brother] unplugged or my beloved Gretsch Pro Jet, usually into a DI or sometimes an amp. I have recently purchased a MXR Super Comp compressor so that goes into my signal chain alongside a Korg tuner pedal and that’s it. Also, I demo tunes into Garageband on my iPad then make minor tweaks on Audacity.
6. And what is your choice bit of gear and why?
Has to be my beautiful black Pro Jet. I would happily accept a Gretsch endorsement if they’re reading this…
7. Where can we check out your tunes?
On our website! We’ve put out two EPs but our debut album Autonomy comes out on 24th July. We’re having a big launch at The Caves in Edinburgh on the 23rd of July tickets can be obtained here. [includes the album on CD and download if you book ahead!]
