The Cash question: originals vs covers
We love a bit of good-natured, educated debate. Discourse that respectfully understands both sides of the argument, plays Devil’s advocate when required and shows us all to be philosophical, witty and respectful of the opinions of others. Of course, sometimes we like to raise our voices at each other and tell them they’re completely wrong…
And what better way to encourage these types of discussions than by comparing some of our favourite songs: originals vs covers?! And so, in what will become a semi-regular series of ‘talking points’, we look at two versions of the same song. Did the composer get it right first time with their version? Is the re-interpretation just plain better? Or do both versions offer something different for a different time, different place or different mood?
To get the ball rolling, let’s start with two comparisons, but with both covers from the same album, by the same man in black. Yes, from American Recordings IV, it’s Johnny Cash covering Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode:
