Originals vs covers: Running up that Hill

Is this the best Kate Bush song? Who cares? It’s a great song either way and its the battleground for this thrilling installment of originals vs covers!

Running up that Hill, the first single taken from the album Hounds of Love, was released in 1985. Hounds of Love was Bush’s best selling album and also included the single Cloudbusting, the video for which featured Donald Sutherland as Wilhelm Reich, the Austrian pyschoanalyst.

But, it is Running up that Hill that we discuss today. Originally titled A Deal With God, the title was changed after label fears that mentioning ‘God’ in the title would cause ‘problems’. The single peaked at number 3 in the UK and was also Bush’s first success in the US for a number of years. It’s also just a great song and regularly makes the upper reaches of polls of the best ever UK singles.

You might think it a travesty to cover a song of such majesty, but, in my humble opinion, Placebo really did it justice, but why don’t you make up your own mind:
