Wampler Paisley Drive review
There are so many overdrive effects pedals on the market that any potential customer looking for their sound can easily be overwhelmed.
I already have at least half a dozen myself but having heard the sound the great Brad Paisley manages to conjure up, I was always curious about the Wampler Paisley drive pedal, designed in tandem with the man himself. Nothing ventured, the other week I took the plunge and bought one.
Visually the unit appears both sturdy and functional.
Volume, Drive and Tone controls are pretty self-explanatory and in practice supply a useful range of sound variation – the drive and volume can be juggled and balanced in order to dial in a mixture of usefully clean-ish boost or alternatively, a more pushed overdrive, according to your own tastes.
I’m a big fan of upper-mid and top-end boost but my particular bugbear is the sometimes overpowering mid-hump which so often accompanies many boost/overdrive units. Not a problem with the Paisley Drive – the inclusion of a three-way mini toggle switch on the right-hand side of the unit offers three different settings; the lowest (apparently favoured by Mr Paisley) gives a full mid boost, the middle position a mid drop and the upper position takes you somewhere in-between, with a slight bias to the upper-mids and top. Add to that, the thoughtful provision of a top-end ‘presence’ boost, via the left-hand mini toggle-switch, and you have one versatile palette of sounds with which to work.
You can be fixated with and simply try to duplicate Brad Paisley’s signature sound if you want to but you’d be missing a trick if you don’t explore the other possibilities contained within this superb little pedal. I really can’t fault it – it may well be ‘the one’ for me.
