The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S8 is here!

The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S8 is here!

The Native Instruments Traktor X1 has long been a part of my djing set up; I added a Z1 as soon as that was released. Between the pair of those, I was almost covered, but I liked using Maschine as well, and – with a lot of modern laptops – that takes you into USB hub territory. For a number of reasons, I decided not to go with the all-in-one dj control solutions of the S4 or S2, but with the release of the NI Traktor Kontrol S8, I might be about to change my mind…

The release of the Traktor Kontrol S8

Let’s start with the most obvious specifiication: the Traktor Kontrol S8 looks like a serious bit of kit. It looks like those two huge screens have been lifted straight from the Maschine Studio and, if you’ve ever seen that in action, you’ll know how impressive they are.

Of course, you’re unlikely to buy a digital dj controller solely on the basis of how it looks, the two screens would be fairly pointless if they didn’t show you what you needed to see, and the rest of the controller needs to give you easy access to all the features you need most – and need to find quickly – as well as being open-ended enough so it can be adapted to your own needs.

Features and specs of the NI Kontrol S8

Having let the glossy ‘introducing’ video show off how it all looks in action, let’s list the key features and specifications of the Traktor Kontrol S8:

4 stereo audio inputs on RCA, switchable between line and phono

Microphone input on XLR and 1/4″

Booth outs on 1/4″

Master outs on XLR and RCA

Headphone output

MIDI in and out

Two hi-resolution colour displays – smart views and pop-up panels deliver dynamic visual feedback that’s more than meets the eye; browse your library, monitor effects, improvise on the fly, and more at the touch of a button – and directly within view

4+4 channel Remix Deck faders plus 16 colour-coded performance pads

On-board 4-channel mixer and Traktor button to switch between Traktor and stand-alone mode

That should probably cover it for now, but obviously there’s a lot more there under your fingertips!

As soon as the first NI Traktor Kontrol S8 hits our stock-room (well, the first batch of non-pre-order ones, anyway!), we’ll get one out for you all to demo and let you know how the Kontrol S8 performs in the real-world.

We’re looking forward to this one…
