Our Top Gear Picks for Buskers
Busking season is upon us! But before you check the weather and get your vocal cords warmed up, let’s make sure you’ve got your set-up intact.
Musical street performers come in all shapes and sounds, from barbershop quartets to sitarists, and everything in between. But let’s focus on the beloved guitar-based busker as they’re very close to our hearts.
Whether you’re a an accomplished performer who’s braved it through all four seasons or a newcomer to the streets, our busking essentials are worth checking out.
The versatility of an electro acoustic guitar gives you the best of both worlds, and if you’re thinking about getting yourself one, we have an amazing selection here at our Red Dog Music shops for you to pick from.
We’ve picked through the list and one of the winners is the Tanglewood TWCRO E. If you’re after great value for money, it doesn’t really get much better than this electro from the Tanglewood Crossroad Series, which pays homage to classic instruments from 1930’s America. We’re pretty impressed! And just look at that beautiful whisky barrel burst satin finish.
Also from Tanglewood, we’ve picked the TW1 from the Winterleaf range. This super folk cutaway solid wood electro acoustic is equally perfect for beginners as well as experts… and no need to break the bank on this one either!
Our third pick is the new Fender Paramount PM2 Deluxe Parlour. You’re looking at an amazing guitar here. If you’re after a great-performing parlour guitar you can plug in, we can absolutely recommend the Paramount PM-2. The small body makes this the perfect guitar for the on the go player. The vintage sunburst and art-deco detail on this guitar make it a real 60’s beauty too!
And, by the way, there’s a case included in that price, which also doubles up as a pavement-mounted loose-change collection receptacle.
Pop in to one of our shops to try these guitars out, or if you’re not in the area, all of our guitars over £99 come with free shipping to most of the UK.
You need to be heard and avoid getting drowned out by traffic. It’s pretty much the most important factor, what would be the point otherwise? Here is our selection of battery powered portable amps, the’re small and lightweight but still noticeably powerful, so you can play it loud whilst you’re on the go.
If you’re after something affordable, a great choice would be the Kinsman KBA158. You get your microphone and instrument channels and 15 W of power. You’ll be instantly ready to go with the Kinsman (as long as the batteries are recharged!).
The Roland Cube Street – which also comes in our very very favourite colour, red – is capable of high-volume output thanks to its high-performance 6.5” neodymium speakers. The Cube Street has six built in digital effects, a tuner and 2-band EQ. There are also delay and reverb settings on the vocal channel. So if you’re looking to play around with your sound a bit more, the Cube Street is right for you!
If that’s not enough and you’d like to see a little bit more of everything, take a look at the Roland Cube Street EX. The EX features a more powerful, full-range stereo sound with dual 8-inch woofers and 2-inch tweeters. There’s a lot to play around with: four independent channels for connecting a variety of mics, instruments or any other devices you’re using. There are also two XLR mic inputs and a Stereo Line Out jacks, so it can even be used as a stage monitor too.
The Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer is perfect for singer-songwriters. It’s your loops, vocals, guitar effects and tuner all crammed in to one pedal. The Acoustic Singer is pretty much ideal if you want to take your studio vocal and guitar sound with you; impressive and convenient! Check out KT Tunstall’s brilliant demo below to see what the pedal can do:
Another handy essential for the singer is the Shure PGA58 Mic-Lead-Stand Pack. This bundle contains a Shure PGA58 dynamic microphone, a stand, mic clip and cable. All at an excellent price. That’s it, you’re all set for busking season. Let us know how you get along!
