International Women’s Day: 10 songs of 2018

International Women’s Day: 10 songs of 2018

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve put together Red Dog Music’s playlist of 10 songs by women from 2018. We’re only on day 67 of the year (not that anyone is counting…), but there is already so much new music out there, and so much of it by incredibly talented women.

To put together a playlist of new music made by women isn’t exactly a challenge for me: other than having had the new Hookworms album on repeat, it seems that I pretty much exclusively listen to music by women anyway.

This playlist is limited to being new releases from 2018, just because this would otherwise turn in to the longest blog post the internet has ever seen… hope you enjoy it and maybe find something new that you’ll like. Happy International Women’s Day!

Courtney Barnett – Nameless, Faceless

Australian indie-rock artist Courtney Barnett’s new single is about angry anonymous internet trolls, and has a killer music video too!

Lucy Dacus – Night Shift

Lucy Dacus’ album was released last Friday, and it’s been on heavy rotation ever since. The lead single is a gigantic break-up anthem driven by guitars. This is destined to be 2018’s biggest song, if you’ll let it play out past 4 minutes:

Beach House – Dive

Yesterday Beach House announced their 7th (!) album along with this mind-bending track ‘Dive’. I’ve probably played it about 1000 times in the last 24 hours, and there is no way I’m stopping with a blissful psych-out like that half way through…

Natalie Prass – Short Court Style

Filled with whoops, hand-claps and a seriously smooth groove, this Natalie Prass song is the disco-pop song to be played over and over again…

The Breeders – Nervous Mary

This year started off right with the announcement of the return of the Breeders! This is one of the best 90’s band reunion you could wish for, featuring the original line-up from ‘the Last Splash’.

US Girls – Mad As Hell

Who says anti-war/protest songs can’t be vigorously catchy and dancy? US Girls takes a 70’s disco beat and transforms it in to a modern pop anthem with a mesmerising hook and melody on this new track ‘Mad as Hell’.

Hinds – The Club

Hinds are a band from Spain that write fuzzy garage-rock hits that are uplifting, empowering and danceable all at the same time. Start your day with their new track ‘the Club’ and it’ll 100% sort you out. Fans of the Strokes, don’t miss this one:

Charlotte Day Wilson – Stone Woman

Producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer Charlotte Day Wilson’s song ‘Stone Woman’ is a beautiful minimal R&B / new soul song, that you’ll give your full attention to instantly.

Sade – Flower of the Universe

Sade is also back! The new song looks like it’s for a new Disney film, but it’s a gentle and quiet track that gives you the right dose of those iconic Sade vocals that we’ve been missing all those years. Let’s hope she’s worked on a new album..

TT – Love Leaks

Theresa Wayman of Warpaint is releasing her self-released debut solo album under the name TT. If the first single ‘Love Leaks’ is anything to go by, the album is looking like it’ll be a cool down-tempo, trip-hop infused album for us to fall in love with.
