Unofficial Festival Playlist #1: an official playlist by Good Grief

It’s August, and Edinburgh has gone through its annual transformation in to the Festival. There’s the Fringe, the International Festival, the Tattoo, the Art Festival and the Book Festival… and it’s all happening at the same time. From rock’n roll to opera – to probably somebody combining the two, on stilts, upside down – we’re spoilt for choice.

While that’s cool, and it’s great to have the world’s biggest on our doorstep, we want to make sure the folks that bring us live music throughout the year aren’t left out, of course! To highlight some of Edinburgh’s non-festival / unofficial events that happen to happen in August, we’ll be asking our local promoters and musicians to share playlists, and tell us about their gigs.

Good Grief & City of Glass Present: Omni / Kaputt / Jonny Pariss

The first playlist comes from Edinburgh promoters Good Grief, who’ve teamed up with City of Glass to bring Atlanta post-punk super group (ex-Deerhunter / ex-Carnivores) to Leith on August 19th for a tenner. Also on the line-up are Kaputt from Glasgow, and Edinburgh’s Jonny Pariss. So if the Brian Wilson tickets were a little over your budget, try Omni at Leith Docker’s Club instead.

Here’s what Good Grief say about their playlist:

“This playlist is a selection of songs we’ve been listening to recently alongside a few of the bands that have played our shows. There’s a lot of great bands coming out of Glasgow at the moment including Robert Sotelo, Kaputt, Vital Idles, Hairband, Irma Vep, and Order of the Toad. There’s also a lot of great releases coming out on labels such as Trouble in Mind, Woodsist, and Upset The Rhythm. Omni are one of our favourites – their angular and melodic post-punk is a nod to bands like Devo, Wire and Talking Heads. This will be their first show in Edinburgh and we hope to bring more great bands to Edinburgh in the future.”

Listen to the playlist:

Omni, Kaputt and Jonny Pariss are playing at Leith Docker’s Club, Edinburgh on August 19th. £10 tickets here. All profits go to Drake Music Scotland.
